Cat litter clay for the ant farm?

Beitragvon A_Wilhelm » 11. Jan 2009 22:02

Hi guys,

I've been reading quite a lot the forum, but the only question I can't find the answer to is: can I use cat litter clay as substrate in the ant farm to keep moisture?

What about perlite?

Thanks!

no, that's not possible! Cat litter contains chemical materials which damage the ants. Better you use seramis or perlite. :)

Thanks for your quick answer, uta!

So perlite would be fine? Usual drill, around 2 cm of perlite, a straw and the sand/loam mixture, right?

Thanks

Hello A_Wilhelm and welcome.

Perlite is works fine.
Yes that is the best way to setup your nest area.

Good luck.

And another question: I intend to put the straw through one of the unused holes in the nest (so that I can top it up without opening the cover). In order to block the space remaining between the straw and the hole surface, I was thinking of using plasticine. Is plasticine safe to ants or is it toxic in any way? If it isn't safe, what else can I use?

Cheers
