I totally agree, I had my Camponotus ligniperda in a XL farm, I could see into the chambers but the ants were less interesting as the foraging behaviour is simple and they were not very active. Now i have them in a big glass fish tank with a day bulb for light and heat so they have loads of space and their behaviour is much more interesting. Also I can see in the nest just by lifting up the tile. I my opinion, having the nest so that it is difficult to get a view of the the queen etc is like waiting to open a great present, you just don't know how good it's gunna be when you do  .

hey Steve do you recon you could split the logs again and the silicone the two halves to the side of a tank and connect with some tubing so its semi natural and you can see them at the same time.
