best kind of heater?

Beitragvon badman » 11. Okt 2007 17:55

Can someone advise me on a heater to buy for my ants, I am looking for something cheap that doesnt use too much electricity. I will probably need something that can heat an antfarm from the outside as I keep 2 farms next to eachother, one is a starter kit so nothing can be placed inside the farm.
I was thinking about a ceramic lamp, and use one of those electric timers to make it come on at intervals.

Also i found an online store where you can buy live crickets to feed exotic pets. How are you meant to keep them?

For what ants do you need it? Maybe a heatmat is enough (they can only heat al little bit) or you have to use a ceramic lamp (they increase the temperature more).

Hello Badman, i find with my ants for heating them i use an underneath heat matt, so you sit the part of the nest you want to heat on top of it, you dont want to heat the whole farm, as the ants will decide where to go according to the temperature they prefer, these matts use very little electricity, i have on the go about 7 as i have tarantula that i also keep, you dont really need a thermostat with these, as the heat produced is minimal, the matts can be bought from most reptile places and are very cheap. Aslo, the crickets of which i also keep, you just need a place to keep them, i use small plastic animal transporters, the kind with part flip up lids that are used to take hamsters/mice to the vets etc, just give the crickets a small dish with water, and cotten wool, and feed them, greens sliced friut, lettuce is good, i actually feed mine specific cricket food, as i need them to be nice and fat and full of vitamins for my tarantula's, the idea being, its is impossible to get vitamins into the spiders, so you feed it to the crickets and in turn it goes to the spiders, so my ants also benefit from this, tho i actually use lockust (that for the ants i need to chop up first) as even the largest of crickets would not be enough for my tarantulas that are as big as my hand... oh incidentally you can buy long thin matts that you can easily sit 2 farms on, and also the crickets need to be warm, not with heat, but not outside, just in a warm room.
Hope this helps you a little

I believe a heat mat should be ok. Because they arent exotic and need much heat :)

I would use a heat mat to, if possible tape it and the side of the farm. (better than underneath)
