Aphaenogaster senilis diet HELP!!

Beitragvon thenamesche » 6. Mai 2011 14:57

Hello, Ive had Colony of Aphaenogaster senilis for about 1 month which is about 100+ strong . They are very interesting to watch and completely fearless .

For Protein I feed them Crickets, flies, worms, spiders and anything that crawls from my garden including lasius niger  .

Now here's my problem I have tried them on Natural honey, Golden syrup , sugar water , refined sugar, cake, oranges , grapes , melons , strawberries, apples, and banana .

Out of that list the only energy food they will eat is Banana.

Also they never seem to drink water, I use a bird water dispenser blocked at the bottom with cotton wool.

So would a diet consisting of many insects and old banana be enough from a nutritional point of view. I have read that this species is a seed disperser . Does that mean they will eat any seeds i give them or specific seed.

I find that there isn't much information on the diet of these ants but apparently the workers can bring the brood up as future queens so they shouldn't become orphans .

Any advice would be appreciated .

I had some of these mate... lovely ants... Just put sugar water down and leave some apple about.. and place drops of honey from the supermarket here and there... They will have it.. just maybe not when your looking...

I tried mine with seeds but they didnt bother at all.. just the insects..

Best of luck..
