It is difficult for small ants to kill them until they forage in large squads. But of course they will eat them if they are dead and cut in half.

Yep, it would be better if you cut them in half.

You'd be amazed where L. niger queen can crawl if she really wants to. My first queen, before laying eggs, was searching the cork nest for proper place and managed to crawl to <1mm space below glass. She was completely flattened, almost two-dimensional, and I thought she has comitted suicide in such a weird way, but finally she came out and found more comfortable place. So don't worry, 8mm would be enough even for Camponotus gigas queen.

haha cool thanks.

i was thinking of getting a cork nest aswell, coz its a sealed nest, and sealed means tht my ants wont escape

but say i were to use a glass tank, would they crawl out of it?

Not if you use something to prevent them from escaping (like PTFE).

I am new too - hi
I have just started using water gel as I found my cotton wool dried out too quickly. The Antstore sells it and it lasts for ages, the ants kind of eat it rather than drown in water.

Bye xxx
