1. When inserting eggs from a different species into a nest, is there any species that generally work well, and some that will always reject the foreign eggs? For example can camponotus eggs be raised by lasius niger and vice versa (can lasius niger raise a major?), also can they be inserted at larvae and coccoon stage aswell?

2. Hybrids. If no other mates are available can 2 similar species mate together, e.g. Lasius flavus and Lasius niger.

Some species wil accept cocoons from other spieces, its possible for closley related species to mate, however the resulting eggs are not usualy viable, and wil never produce viable/fertile alates, i wuld not expect this to happen any way tbh, as ants use scent for most communication and they can tel species apart

Thats kind of disappointing, you at least get one sterile generation with some plants and higher mammals. I was hoping to create some kind of frankenstein ant.

interestingly these 2 ants breed together in the wild, producing only workers, the hybridised workers are more aggressive. This is pretty much the only thing on the whole internet on the subject though

1. The best are all Formica species, which generally tend to accept each other's pupae and larvae (i don't know if eggs too, but probably not). Others usually accept only brood of their own species, and sometimes of the same subgenus. Parasite and host species also accept each other's brood, e.g. Lasius umbratus and L. fuliginosus. Making joint Lasius/Camponotus colony is absolutely impossible.

2. Sometimes it's possible, but probably only in the same subgenus - so not with Lasius (Cautolasius) flavus and Lasius (Lasius s.str.) niger, but maybe with L. niger and L. emarginatus. This is unlikely, however, these ants lived together for millions years and they are sexually unattractive to each other (different sexy scent tastes). Sometimes hybrids are effect of introducing alien species, which never lived together, for example Solenopsis invicta and S. richteri, both introduced to USA, do make hybrids.
