Nest & Basin temperature

Beitragvon Deveant » 21. Jun 2008 10:32

If nest and basin connected both of them should have same temperature? I think that in basin temperature can be 25-30, but in a nest should be lower. Because in nature it's underground and should be 20-25 for messor barbarus. Or I'm wrong and nest should have higher temperature? I just worried that if I put heatmat next to wet ytong inside xl farm drops of water will start to appear in a glass. As well as far as I know there glass lid so no ventilation in a nest except by a tube from basin...

25C is a good nest temp for Messor, the basin tempreture really doesnt matter to much, as long as its not so cold they cant work (ie below 15C)

So with what you recommend heating nest to 25-30c? Heat mat? Lamp?

So this do you think is this ideal setup for them?

I would recomend you keep the nest at a steady 25 +/-1C, this could go upto 27C for a short time during the day to simulate noon, however always make sure your colony has somewhere cooler to escape to!

Yep that setup would be fine :) Messor like a fairly dry nest, although its good to have a small area which is damp

Miszt thank you for your answers!

Still one question is puzzling me how to heat the Glass XL... I though best way to put heat mat to one of the sides. Well if I put in side where I cut my y-tong then I can't see my ants anymore :) If I put it from other side then I'm worried it wouldn’t be enough heating for them. As well ytong going to be wet from water for humidity, but condensation will appear on a glass because only way outside for water is trough ant entrance to their nest... Or I'm worrying too much?

Yes the best way the heat this farm is to put the heat mat on the side. You can not see your ants any more but they need it dark so than you have fixed to problems in one. ;) And if you like to see inside of the farm you can remove the heat mat for a few minutes.

You are going to have condensation, but not where the heat mat is.

Thanks !

doesnt matter where you put the heat mat in regards to heating the farm, dont worry about that, but as Jimmy said, you may get condensation, so I would recomend you put it on the front so your view is not obscured, stick it on with Gaffa tape or something, and it will take you half a second to remove to check your colony

rember to give them a cool section of the nest to! and I highly recomend you use a thermostat to cut the tempreture before it gets over 30C, heatmats can easily and quickly heat up to 60C+, which would fry your ants in a matter of seconds
