Help starting out

Beitragvon phers » 25. Mai 2007 11:23

Hi everyone, great forum btw. :)

i'm looking to start my own colony and was thinking of the following setup.

Colony of Lasius Niger or Myrmica Ruba
antstore starter set - glassfarm/arena - classic with Colour sand and extra snad mix.
a 35ml drinking trough for water
a bag of bloom-poll for food?
and some stick plants for decoration.

is this all i need? any comments / suggestions or advice welcome.

cheers

i havent used the bloom-poll before. i just feed my little minions some crickets and bugs, and of course honey! sounds a good start.

i would get some sticky foam tape for the lid of the ant farm and basin. and also some PTFE solution, as this will help prevent escapes! Also i little dish or two, for the honey and food to go into!

hope this helps.

it sounds good. i started with the acryl-starterset and im not satisfied. i think the glass-starterset has more stability.
furthermore i offered:
-a sponge
-a bowl
-red PVC-foil
-and liquid PTFE

These accessories are perfekt to start with. :thumright:

both species are realativly easy to look after, i have both. I have found my Mymica rubra more interesting, but this only because its got 3 queens and around 250 workers, lol.

Have you looked at ytong nest? this way you can see the activtiy in the nest.

no i dont have anything at all at the momment. i'm just about to start collecting? (dont know if thats the right word?) is a ytong the type made from plaster with area's already tunnelled out?

i was thinking i like the vertical one with the nest between two sheets of glass, like the one you get in the starter pack.

Hi Phers and welcome to the forum.

No y-tong and plaster are different kind off material. If you use the vertical one with the nest in between of the glass there is a change you are not able to see the hole nest (because you need to fill it with sand) if you use a y-tong nest you can always look inside the nest if you want. But that is up the you. ;)
Take a look at the gallery at this site, many examples of farm. So you have a idea what you want.
