if the nest area is not moist will the ants still survive? i have a ytong nest.

they will settle down there where they like it, and they like moist places.
So if u want to give´em a nice home make sure their nest is moist.
(somehow moist reminds me of mustard )
I don´t really know what happens if they don´t find a place for their nest but it will surely not be good...

It is indeed better to keep the nest moist. If you don't keep it moist they shall try to find a better place to live.
