Australian Queen ID

Australian Queen ID

Beitragvon Bcam » 10. Jan 2016 01:00

Hi guys,

I'm new around here and I've just started collecting Ants!

I need an ant queen ID.

I found this queen in my bathroom whilst I was taking a shower.

It was collected in Macs Cove, Victoria, Australia at an altitude of approx. 600m.

The body colouration is light to medium brown and fairly consistent throughout the body.

Her length is approx. 11mm

I have included a video link below.

If you require any further information please let me know.

Thank you in advance!

With over 6000 species in Australia, this is hard to tell, unfortunately the video quality is not the best.
Could you provide some photos from the top and from the sides? Also, a photo of the mandibles and the head would be helpful. From the looks of it, until now, it could be everything, from Trichomyrmex destructor to Solenopsis geminata, Solenopsis invicta, Ochetellus sp. even though the form of the head wouldn't fit so much for Solenopsis geminata.

Hi Nortorn,

I managed to get this photo of another queen that was collected at the same time. She has lost her wings so you can see her more clearly hopefully this will help.

That's one strange ant queen! I've never seen this head shape before... Well, weird Australia.
After some research I came to the conclusion that this should be an Anonychomyrma queen.

Greetings, Phil
