ANTSTORE World of Ants

Iam very much interested in ants. I live in the U.S.A. So Im not sure if I can keep a queen ant. Iam being told I can. But I dont see any stores selling queens. They only sell workers. I wanted to get a glass aquarium and set it up. I was interested in a 40breeder terrarium. 1foot tallx 3feet longx 18inch wide.

I dont know how to keep the ants inside without having an escapee. I mean I could make a glass lid or something. But if I ever go on a vacation trip(I probably will eventually) which is ussually for a week they will need air. anyway I can keep the ants inside and have atleast some form of ventilation?

Whats the best ant for begginners? I dont want something thats going to get out and sting me. Like harvester ants. Which I been bit by harvester ants and I used to live in puertorico. So I got bit by puertorican fire ants. It hurts like heck. I want something thats constantly active and the queen lives long(10 years or so).
This would be my first formicarium. Ived never had those antworks or whatever its called. I dont like the plasters. I rather see the ants build on their own. Its what they were ment for work work work. I also dont like those thin formicariums. I know how they dont like light in their nest. So I could make a cover for the nest(outside of the nest in the glass) I could put a very thick sheet of cloth on the sides of the nest so light doesnt go through and I can take it to the bottom of the tank.

I would just like some help. I dont know everything about ants. But ived been doing some research on them and Ived been watching documentaries. I love leaf cutter ants. I also heard that massor ants are the best for glass aquariums cause they dont climb on the glass(kinda dont want them to constantly try to climb out.

Hi there and to the forum.

As far as I know the US have slightly different legislation. You will only be allowed to keep ant species that are native to the biosphere in your state.

Regardless of the species you choose you will need a basin in which your ants can forage (the so-called arena) and one your colony can live in (farm). These are connected by a tube. The nest in the farm can be provided as ytong or gypsum nest, or you can let your ants dig their own nest in a sand-loam mixture.

No attempt to challenge antstore, but check out antscanada. (Please tell me, if I am violating any rules here.) They provide some "random but helpful tutorials" on youtube as well as hardware and ants via their homepage. Their staff should be able to help you with the respective jurisdiction, plus it might be a less stressful journey for your ants from Canada in comparison to Germany.
