cant seem to get rid of them, but the plants are doing pretty well despite them. I bought a chili plant in the summer, it spread aphids to my tomato and basil plants. The chili gets so overrun that I have to hose it down, but the aphid population always comes back pretty quickly.

I'm thinking of placing one of them in a glass basin for my ants, either Lasius niger or Tetramorium caespitum.

2 problems with this are:

How to stop the ants nesting in the plant pot. And also I will have to take the lid off the basin to make head-room for the plant, so I'm almost definitely going to get escapees.

Anyone else ever used aphids like this?

Never.. but its an awesome idea.. ive seen ants in the garden farming the aphids on our roses.. Im def planning on trying it out this year. As for not nesting in the pot.. take some of the soil/compost out and put a good layer of small stones on top.. Stopping the escapes is easy too.. Vaseline.. a nice big 2" deep strip right around the top.. and then go over it once a week to keep it fresh.. works on all my ants
