I was just wondering, can you use cotton wool at the bottom of the formacarium to stop mould instead of getting that granulate?

No it will mould too fast.
Just use little stones, you don´t have to buy anything. And stop spaming randomly! It is very very annoying!
Cotton wool is a very bad idea in my opinion.

NO.. Cotton Wool at the bottom is a very bad idea... Any little stones will do the job..
