My farm!

My farm!

Beitragvon ItsJason » 29. Apr 2009 04:16

Hi everyone, Jason here.
I have some questions on a slim ant farm I have made.
Right now I have some sand that is filtered into grains about 2-3mm across. The the ant farm is 45 cm wide and 61 cm tall with a gap of about 10mm (but it bulges to about 15mm across in the middle.) The queen is 15mm long, so I am guessing the workers will be 5-10mm long.
Basically, I am wondering if the sand is the right size and if my slim ant farm is too slim for nesting. The ants I have were found in a desert climate, so I have the feeling they will like the sand. I will also attach a foraging tank (either 10 or 20 gallons, whichever I feel like using when I make it) to the nesting area.
Thanks for your help!
~Jason

Any idea what species it is?

I don't really think it's too thin, most ants can accomodate this pretty well, but the prefference varies alot from species to species. However, for the sand I'm worried that if it's dry, and there's not enough loam in it the tunnels might collapse.

I really have no idea what loam is. What is it and where can I get some? :D
And yeah, I'm planning on keeping it fairly dry because they are desert ants. No idea what specie it is yet. Picts here viewtopic.php?f=131&t=11353

You know, I'm honestly not entirely sure myself being Swedish and all, but it's a pulver of clay-like properties that helps the sand bind once wet.
