Hibernation for Myrmica Rubra ???

Beitragvon chris » 3. Feb 2004 11:26

Hello,

I just have received one colony of Myrmica Rubra, thank you. They need to make hibernation... I put the test tube in a dark place at 10-12 degree.

Temparature and light seems to be ok? Need to feed them or they already eat lot of proteins for hibernation?

When have I to quit hibernation and add hunting area for feed them, end february?

Regards.

Hello chris!

During the hibernation the metabolism goes down and so the ants don´t consume much energy. This is why you don´t have to feed them resp. the ants will not eat. You only have to watch over humidity, because to much contain the risk that the ants can drowned, to less contain the risk that the ants can dehydrate.

If there is enough water in the water-tank behind the cotton whool its ok, look that there will not existe a little "water puddle" (because cold water will spread).

The hibernation will end march/april, when the temperture normally get more warmer. Try to simulate nature conditions... during the warmer month the ants will show high activity and during the colder onces they need to regenerade, like "sleeping".

P.S. Sorry that I write so late.
