just got my atc 300 thermostat and i got it on testing with crickets for now but says needs to be in contact with glass or stone or what not to get reading anyone know a good material which will give me same reading as outside temp not just the object temp as this could vary quite a bit

I think most material will heat up. Maybe it would be better if you could hang it in the air, if you know what i mean.

yeh that dont work it as 2 metal contacts it needs to be in i was thinking of a cup with some soil in it and placing that cup in container

yep i got a small cup but soil in it but it next to the tube and now the temps are reading im guessing its 1 -2c higher in soil then tube as holdin heat but i just set temp to what i want for that
