Paratrechina longicornis

Beitragvon melk9 » 16. Feb 2009 21:38

Today I was comming back from lunch and I found a huge colony of Paratrechina longicornis moving to a new nest just in the middle of my living room. I managed to colect two queens and a lot of workers, eggs and larvaes. They are already inside the formicary, happy in the new home!

You guys will not believe!!!!!!
Today was raining very much, but I had to go to University where I teach design. And I had a huge surprise wgen I saw the walls of the university full of males and queens of Camponotus maculatus and another specie that look like a Pogonomyrmex. So I runned to a pharmacy and bought ten plastic little pots, to collect them. So now I have four queens of Camponotus and 4 of this one that looks Pogonomyrmex. Let's see what happen now! I post photos when I have chance! Uhuuuuuuuuu!

Well, Steve! As I said before Brazil is a luxurious place when the subject is the enviroment, so the biodiversity develops easily. We have tiny spiders that almost can't be mesured and in another side we have, as well, spiders so big that they feed from birds and small rodents. Than imagine now when the subject is ant, which is a specie that easily adapt in nature!!! Just in my garden I have two species of odontomachus, several sp of camponotus, Formica ant (a beautiful colony), Paratrechina longicornis, Pheidole sp (in my kitchen and in the garden) and several kinds of crematogasters. There are others very small, yellow and red coloured, but I don't know their names, just like the big black one that eats the sweet liquid from aphidies. ;^) Imagine in the parks?????

I was a little concerned about the eggs and larvaes of the paratrechina colony, because I wasn't able to see them in the middle of the ants, but yesterday I saw a lot of larvaes in development. Cool!

How long have you not taken a shower? Can't imagine finding a colony that large behind your bathroom door! :D

Are you going to pick them up and put them in a formicarium?
