is there any difference in price in buying just a queen than getting a brood with her

Do you think its better getting just a quenn or a full brood

which ants would you recommend for being the most interesting and active eg searching and gathering food

which ants do you currently have in stock

and the last question how long can the ants live for

Hello jjbull and welcome,

1) There is no price difference between only a queen and a queen with brood. Only if she have first worker, we don´t sell it the same price.

2) Nobody can give one answer to this questions, becuase you must think that htere are many differences between the species. This question must be answered regarding the wishes from the person....

Do you want to study or watch the development from the beginning or do you only want to save some money?

At first I recommend you to choose the specie and after this ye could talked over this point. For example Lasius niger: there would be no problem to get only a queen and then let grow up the colony. With Camponutus its more difficuld and I never would recommend this way to a beginner.

3) Many things in holding ants are a matter of taste and how much money the person will spend for this. Every specie have his interessting points, so its impossible to say what you like. If you have some in the inner choise its better for me to give you support - so please take a look into our shop and click through the animals.

4) This is also a questions that different to the species, e.g. it was reportet that a Lasius niger queen had been hold for 29 years in capture. Other queens lives nearly 5-10 years, when you give them the best conditions.

i was thinking of getting Myrmica rubra or Pheidole pallidula i was going to keep them in a 40cm by 20cm by 20cm glass tank and have 2 smaller boxes for them to feed and waste in, i am not too bothered in seeing them tunnel i just want to keep them in the correct conditions. Are these 2 tyoes easy to keep and quite acctive during the day when it comes to things like hunting for food etc

I would recommend you Myrmica rubra, because this specie is better for starting in ant keeping. You can build them a ytong nest to watch the nest activities. I also have one young M. rubra colony in a ytong nest with red foil before it and there are no problems, the colony grows well!

For this specie you can use your 40*20*20 glas basin, you don´t need the smal boxes. But when the colony grows up, you can connect the boxes and so give them more place. You can put the ytong nest into the basin with some soil and maybe accesories, take care of the outbreak safety and thats all.

the tank isjust over half full withsand and loam is this ok, i havea few small stones and branches with moss on them in the tank is this ok also
