Adam

I don't know much about these ants. Their mandibles suggest some sort of specialised diet, and the compound eyes are very large for an ant. Can you give me any info on diet and behaviour? The jumping thing is also interesting. What kind of distances are we talking about? I guess even relatively short leaps would give them distinct hunting advantage.

Hello Damondeionno, Im new at keeping these ants so my knowledge is fairly limited at the moment ,but i can answer some of your questions
The ants have perfect eyesight upto a metre and watch me walk around my room and they follow me along there tank .They can jump but mine jump about 2 cm so a lid on the food area is a must lol . Due to perfect eyesight they can hunt and are very quick , they can sting and there jaws are good at grabing and snapping shut. Hope this helps

Adam :D

@KiamCameron: Nearly every ant can put a man into hospital if it's able to inject (by a sting or spraying ... of biting I've never heard) it's poison. That's because of an allergic reaction (and only a small part of humanity has problems with generalized allergic reactions caused by that, small reactions around the stinging point is normal). There are some tropic ants (paraponera clavata - bullet ants) which sting hurts that much and for such a long time that it even can cause a shock and put you in hospital. Normally it will hurt a lot and you won't try it out again, but dieing because of an ant sting is often because of allergic reactions, not because of a potent toxin.

greetings

btw. these ants are from Asia/India ... you might be thinking of Myrmecia pavida, they are from Australia ... but i don't think they're capable of jumping

Adam, thanks very much for answering my questions. Eyesight that good is very unusual in Ants, and I find it fascinating.

Dr House - I don't think Myrmecia pavida can jump, but there are some Myrmecia species in Australia and Tasmania that can jump (and I think it is more than a couple of cm) and sting. The Australians refer to them all generically as bull ants or inch ants.

I was born in Australia and have been back a couple of times.

KiamCameron

Take a look at this. Follow the links about each species. There are about 40 Myrmecia species in Australia.
