Beitragvon sithmaster676 » 23. Okt 2007 18:38

hi all
after viewing my colony for the past few days i thought it necessary to post something on this forum
their nest entrance seems to have been completely blocked of and it seems to have be done by myself after wetting the tank :? .
will th colony be ok? as im not sure if they can free themselves.

I think the will unblock it themselves, they are good at it. ;) But if you are scared they can not do it them self, try to open it a bit with a needle ore something like that.

i have tried to place a hypodermic needle down the entrance but im not sure which way the tunnel goes as it doesn't go straight down like you would expect. so i shall leave it for a while to see if they unblock it themselves.
but will they be able to get enough air down into there chambers.

how big is the colony? i'd be very wary of trying to reopen the nest for them, ants are excellent diggers, humans however, on that scale are clumsy oafs lol

the colony is around 30 workers in size and have lots of brood. im not sure whether they have done it themselves or i done it by accident by they still haven't opened the entrance.

ok then but it has been about a week now and there has been no attempt to try and reopen the entrance unless there are in hibernation and want it sealed

Sith... please... do use some comon sence. When you walk around outside do you see OPEN anthills with ants running all over the place? I think not. All you can see is a lump of earth with no entrances/exits and no ants outside. You wonder why? Well it is mostly because in the winter it is quite cold outside and cold air is heavier than warm air. Meaning if ants wouldn´t block all their tunnels and insulate them selves from the outside temperatures they would all freeze...

So don´t worry about your ants... they are just following their instinct. They know how to take care of themselves. They´ve been doing this for millions of years. And belive me that they don´t your help to undig themselves.

i know that they do this throughout the winter but my bedroom is at a constant 23 degrees c so there is no reason for them having to keep themselves warm.

Mpir knows his stuff! being that there is 30 of them, if they need to get out for any reason, they will remove the block. just keep an eye on them. if it really really really looks bad then do something about it. If they remain alive and seem fine, then let them do as they please.

i wasn't planning on a huge excavation of there nest but as i can't see whether the colony is alive or not because they have made there tunnel in the center of a large fish tank, i will wait for a week or so and if nothing happens i will presume there are in hibernation and i shall move them into my garden shed and wait till next year.
