My Atta cephalotes

Beitragvon mpir » 15. Aug 2007 09:29

@Skippy

Very nice car collection indeed. :) :P

@ adam james

I have the same question as everybody else here: It does not happen that some ant might fall of the rope? Or climb the small rope on to the ceiling? And you do know that ants can fall into the water and swim out on the other side?

Nevertheless I like the "open" approach and the direct contact with ants.

Hi , lol no the ants do not attempt to escape the rope is pulled tight so it doesent droop , It is held up bye two lenths of wire and there is a smear of grease on each one to stop the ants climbing onto the ceiling . Ive only ever had 7 workers fall of and that was when i knocked the rope by accident and they fell .

Hi all,

Great pictures. :D

Were do you get the equipment for this species? If the temperature is to high the queen will become sterile, but if the temperature is to low the fungus will die. Also how do you keep the humidity at a constant measure?

Anyway the colonies look grate and full proof. =D>

Thats a fantastic set up, I would love some leafcutter ants. What kind of grease do you use to keep them from escaping?

And what kind of grease would be helping against flying individuals? Also, one push and you have an exotic colony on the run on a new enviroment. cant see anything fantastic about it at all. shocking that this gets ANY positive feedback.

Hi Adam,
Why? You came out showing your setup, and im telling you what there is to be said about it. Especially since anyone happening to see the reaction you get here might be mislead to think positive about your construction. I see you dont much care, but maybe others can be persuaded to do things right.
Cant handle criticsm? Try setting up a decent tank then and give your ants a proper and responsible care. Maybe thatll stop me.

I'm afraid i have to disagree with you Necturus, Leaf Cutters are very sensitive to their enviroment, and as Adam lives in the UK, it is impossible for them to escape into the wild

Most Zoo's and Museums in the UK have Atta ants crawling about on rope just the same as Adam does, because there is no danger of them interfering with wildlife in this country

If he lived sumwhere tropical that doesnt have Atta or other leaf cutters already, then i'd be inclined to agree with u

You are absolutly right, you should never keep any animal in a way that may mean it can get into the local wildlife if it is an alien species, but in this case, its safe :)

But its not only the thing from escaping. But i think he wont be happy when dozen of leave cutters run through the kitchen....
Do you have at no time a single ant on the floor? No time that one fall down?

We dont want to be the bad ones....but we worried about escaping ants. In your country, garden or only the kitchen ;)

Must say i liked the setup (still do) but never thought about it so far.

If they ants like it maybe its not that bad, it up to Adam to prevent them from escaping. Off course its best they can not escape but like miszt said i don't think they can survive in England, what does not mean you need to try it out ;)

Hey mizt,
you are missing an important point there. Escaping ants do not depend on the "outside" enviroment. In our "civilized" world, there are plenty of places warm enough to sustain any colony during the entire year. There even is a report in the german part of the forum of leafcutters living inside a wall of a house IN GERMANY, and looking around in hospitals, zoos, and long distance heat tunnels will show you plenty of other "invaders".
I'm not even going to mention incest...
And i repeat, one clumsy visitor, one earthquake, one sneeze at the wrong time, and youll have a colony on the run. How long do you guys think will they wait to be noticed and cleaned up before moving the queen somewhere else?
