Help to the newbie

They are Lasius niger, queen & approx 7 or 8 workers, they took four weeks to move out of test tube into display. Haven't seen much of the workers recently, might have been put off by the recent bad weather, lol.

Lasius niger is a slow mover. ;) I used a little 'force' to make them move from there tubes to the Y-tong nest. ;)
This is a normal behavior for such a small colony, they feed at night (the like the dark, thinking they are save) once the colony grows they come out during day also. Be patient. ;)

Some my experience with moving my ants

I´ll get light on the old test tube ,and I´ll get book on ytong nest (dark inside) . Ants dont like light in nest and when is new ytong nest able for them ,the move VERY quickly (it during max <5 hours) ;) :) ,some species like Myrmica is more quicklier ,it during in medium colony <1 hour ,when is light on old and dark inside new formicarium ;) :)

I now that Skippy ;) When i was trying to move my Lasius niger there was a lamp above the nest 24/7 and after a week they still where in the tubes, so i had no other option than to 'help' them move. ;) lol

I have used Butter to keep ants in there tanks never use covers and no one gets out. depending on the kind of ant the wider the butter may need to be to stop them from getting out. But has worked for around 24 year in keeping them in there jars. :D

Yep Butter works better for some, Mostly the bigger ants have a harder time getting throw it. But small ant will stop try even if a few do make it threw. I put it on the top rim of the jar when pulling the ants out of the dirt. Makes so you do not need to take the cover off each time you grab a ant to put in it.
