Queen Ant with egg on her back.

Any idea what species she is - she has a dozen eggs already

So ... I saw this picture on 95 percent first from this forum yesterday and I am sure on 100 percent ,that first queen is Camponotus sp. ,and she is huge ,on photo it is look like all black big Camponotus ligniperda ,but this is ... dont know. Second queen .... It look like some Aphaenogaster or somethink like that ,Myrmecinae ,no Formicinae

Thanks for the info Skippy - That first Queen when I found her and was handling her to put her in the test tube was real careful because I didn't want to get bit - did you see her head size???

Yes ,I am very interested by her head (it was first what I looked on this photo yesterday ,very big head) ,I wish you to make good nice colony ,kids will be happy

Very nice ants 4mykids (nice catch) not sure on the species. First one could be a Camponotus sp. like Skippy said but i can not help you with it.

The first one is a Camponotus.

The second one is likely a Formica of some kind, if she were caught recently. If she were caught a few months ago (May) then I'd go with Prenolepis imparis.

When do Camponotus tend to swarm in the US?

Earliest I have on record was in March. The bulk of them start in April though and increase into June, ending in July.

The big queen has about a dozen or more workers already and about 24 eggs. I moved them to a huge tube because she was too big to turn hrself around in that regular size tube - i'll keep you all i the loop with some pics soon -
