Camponotus cruentatus care aspects

Beitragvon Danzel_From_Russia » 2. Nov 2017 17:19

Hello there,our European colleagues!
I am planning to start Camponotus cruentatus colony but I have a major problem:In Russia NOBODY has kept them,so I am here.
I would like to ask You some questions:
1.Is the Cruentatus that agressive as people talk about it?
2.In which proportion do you make Honey-Water?
3.Which cockroaches Cruenta eats with with the greatest enthusiasm?
4.Does it have any problems on first stages of colony like slow development, eating brood for no reason etc
5.How many months do you hibernate the colony?
6.How bad or good ants undergo transportation?
I think that is all questions

Hello,

in general Camponotus cruentatus are an easy ant to keep and as such they eat pretty much anything. I wouldn't worry about the concentration of the sugar water but I would not delude it very much since they are a dry living ant and will at some point have to get rid of the exess fluid...
However as you mentioned big colonies are amazingly aggressive, once had one Major in Portugal bite through my fingernail.

Other then that the species is amazingly sterdy but needs quite high temperatures, are actually one of the more xerotherm species that I have encountered in Europe.

The founding is rather boring then hard, they don't have the growing speed that tropical Camponotus sometimes posess.

Regards,
Kaj.

That is always a difficult question. Giving an exact time is hard because Camponotus cruentatus live partialy very far south on the Iberian Paninsula where there is only a very mild winter.

In keeping you could probably easily get away with as little as 4-6 weeks, I did that in the past.

Kaj.

I generally would wait until you have about 10 ants to give them such a nest but you can even let them found in such a nest.
But they generally develope better when you first let them found in a testing tube and later move them to a bigger nest.

However if you want to you can keep them in a testing tube a very long time.

Kaj.

I have not heard or noticed anything special about their cleanliness either negative nor positive.
