Making ants viseble

Beitragvon 11supplier » 6. Aug 2005 15:17

Well I wanted to start holding an antcolony (doh).
Well I got a aquarium. I can fill it with sand and find a antqueen but thats not really more fun than watch the ants in my garden right?

I want to make my antfarm in when they catch a whesp and dragg in into their hole I still see what happens. And I can see the queen laying her eggs.

Is there mayb a special antfarm I need to buy where I can really see what happens I cant really get a good look on the antfarms in the shop pictures. (like the glass is really close to eachother or something).

I did see the nasa gel. But I cant find where u can just buy the gel. + why do most plp dont use nasa gel + I dont like the idea the gel is also their food. I wanna feed them myself. And on that way there will be a time I run outa gel ;).

Plz tell me what solutions u use to look into the nest. I hope you can show me some pictiers of how u did it. (if u dont wanna post them u can e-mail me :)).

Already thks,

Best way to watch Ants is to look for a queen in nature and keep her in a glastube but there will be the time, that the new colony is to big for it, and you will have to let them move into a bigger home... which could be the antfarm, where they can build their nest themselves. Eventhough you could build a nest for them, which is easily to establish from this kind of airbubbled-concrete-stuff, which is called Y-Tong in Germany... You know it? It´s kind of concrete with billions of bubbles of air in it... You just have to scratch, e.g. with a screwdriver, some passages and chambers in it... But be aware of making them to big, otherwise the ants will settle down anywhere but in the chambers... Then you take sillicon and fix kind of acrylene-glas(don´t know ecactly how it´s called) onto it... There you can easily watch them, but they can´t dig anyhow!!!

Last but not least you put a hole on the Nest, which musn´t have any way to the ants´ nest and put water in it, so the the water canget through the concrete and keep it wet, not to let the ants dry out and die...

Hope that makes sense to you!!!

That´s the way I keep my ants, too...

The thing I meant was this [web]http://www.antstore.biz/de/shop02/product_info.php?cPath=39&products_id=447[/web] tiny thing...
But I can only support you: I don´t like the fact too, that the ants can´t dig themselves...
The product you linked in your thread is perfect to watch them... You can fix it on one of the aquarium´s walls and watch them both moving around in the arena and care the brood and stuff... But the arena should only be filled with dry fine sand... because of the ants moving into it to live there, when it´s also wet and stable! If you want to make the farm more attractive to the ants put a red plastic sheet (<== you see I have to improvise on expressions I don´t know in English) like this one on[web]http://www.antstore.biz/de/shop02/product_info.php?cPath=69&products_id=115[/web] on one side of the farm... Ants can´t see red light so they think its dark!!!
