I'm very interested in buying my first ant set up, I'm looking at the medium combi starter kit and was really just wondering how the ants were to get from the basin to the nest being as they are together. From the picture I see two holes at the back of the nest leading to the basin. So if I was to put my test tube set up in the basin left open would the ants use the holes at the bottom to enter and tunnel upwards or would I use a tube so the can climb up to the top of the nest and tunnel downwards it's not so clear as to how it works. You should not care about this.
Put the testtube into the basin and wait.
If the ants want to dig down, they will dig down.
And if they want to dig up, they will dig up.
This is not important for you and there are no differences with keeping the ants in this both ways.
The ants will decide by themselve which is the better way for them.

So to clarify the two holes are made for the ants and are not part of a drainage system. I am not bothered on how the ants choose to tunnel and dig it's there home to do as they want. I just didn't want to buy this and set it up wrong and kill these small wonders of nature by accedent. From what I have read I make the clay balls 1 to 2 cm deep and sand on top but from what I can see from the pictures the two holes are about where the clay balls will be. I just want to make it right

I think the two holes are a part of the drainagesystem if there are the clayball on this height.
But the ants could remove them and use the holes a tunnels, but then the holes work as drainagesystem too.
