Solenopsis geminata Journal

Beitragvon Antagoniser » 27. Sep 2014 07:12

Hi guys, Ive recently moved over to Phnom Penh, Cambodia and have already found my new Ant queen on this side of the pond.

She looks to me like a Solenopsis geminata queen.
I found her on the floor of my local convenience store( how convenient) on Thursday 18/09/14 at 20:00 and it had been raining all day previous to this.

I had to collect her quickly so I purchased a box of tooth picks for a $1 and quickly emptied its contents to give the queen a temporary new home much to the shop assistance bemusement.

Now I realize that I'm incredibly limited with what I can keep this queen inside for a make shift home. I can find no test tubes anywhere in this city and the postal service here is dodgy at the best of times. I can imagine trying to ask the locals on where I may purchase a block of y tong or some plaster of Paris.

Its going to be a challenge for sure but hopefully worth it.

I don't have any kind of test tube but I did bring a small syringe. She seems quite content in here at the moment and has laid a small pile of eggs 1 week on.

This will be used as the arena/nesting box for now and it will be much easy to feed the growing colony.

Now you may laugh but Ive searched everywhere for test tubes but to no avail but when I found this skipping rope I thought this just might work for a make shift test tube.
If anyone has any other suggestions for possible living quarters feel free to enlighten me.

Luckily I did bring some PTFE with me. I really don't want to wake up in the middle of the night covered in fire ants lol.
If this method fail I could try using my setup as an ant island surrounded by cooking oil.
And hopefully this will keep the Pharaoh ants out of my setup.

Quick update: The Queen is still laying eggs each day and Ive Captured many more alates from the same convenience store. Strange that their mating flights are so spread out in the same colony
