An AntsNational™ Species Premiere, brought to you by A Cultured Legacy™:
"Sanguinea: Dynasty of the Blood Queens"

Profiling the age-old clash between predator and prey, Formica sanguinea, known as the 'Blood Ant,' ["sanguinea" derives from the latin word meaning "blood"] predates upon their Forimicine hosts: The Black Field ant, Formica fusca. Unlike most ant queens, these 'Raptiformica' queens have a dark, sinister method to founding their colony. They don't simply dig a hole into the ground and raise their first workers alone from scratch. Once leaving the nest and mating, F. sanguinea queens fan out in search for their Serviformica hosts, and if all is timed properly, the F. sanguinea queens will steal the unhatched pupae from other species, but not to eat them--they intend to forge their own colony through the enslavement of their encaptured Serviformica pupae who will hatch convinced that the F. sanguinea queens are their original mothers. The F. sanguinea queens will also attempt to kill the resident Serviformica host queen (In this case, potentially the F. fusca queen) to steal her identity--and her empire.

While the F. sanguinea queens are dormant, awaiting patiently the beginning or end of their lives, the Black F. fusca queen and her colony now have new hungry mouths to feed. The eggs that the queen laid almost 2 weeks ago have begun to hatch. This drives the worker ants to forage for their younger, voraciously hungry larval-stage sisters. In a few weeks from now, the larvae will have grown large enough to enter pupation. Just like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, these larvae will spin a protective cocoon (called a pupa) into which they will completely reassemble their bodies into adult form. This is called metamorphosis.

As each day passes, the time for the Blood Ant Queens to strike draws closer. Find out what happens in a few weeks at Antsnational™.
