"Empire of the North: The Red Queen"

After collecting the young queen myself last summer, I kept her in a test tube with the standard cotton+water technique. Boosting her a bit with a few pupae from other queens of the same species, she ended up laying more eggs than her fellow neighbouring sister queens her age and in effect gave birth to a larger-than-normal empire. In Nearctic North America, ants of the genus Camponotus are in fact of the largest. Whilst workers of this species of Camponotus can reach sizes of 6mm-13mm, queens can reach whopping sizes of ~15mm!

Considered a pest in most homes, these ants are very opportunistic and will nest in insulation, under floorboards, near sinks, in walls --anywhere where it is moist and warm. Wild colonies are known to nest in the ground, but mostly prefer rotting wood or soft wood like logs. These animals also create "satellite" nests where when a nest gets too large workers will separate from the queen nest and build an extra nest to house larvae and pupae. Although the nests have been separated, they are still connected as workers pass from one nest to another. Satellite nests are queenless, and one mature colony of C. noveboracensis may contain a dozen satellite nests and reach a total population of 30,000 individuals! Commonly mistaken for termites, these ants eat insects and sugars and NOT WOOD.

These ants defend their nests with their tough mandibles and as well as excreting formic acid from their abdomens. Most carpenter ant species are polymorphic (different caste sizes for different nest duties), and this species is no exception. The soldiers guard the nest from intruders and have massive heads which store powerful muscles for delivering a very strong bite as well as digging tunnels, and the smaller to medium sized workers take care of the queen and brood (eggs, larvae, pupae) as well as forage for food.

At AntsNational we show you the more intimate side of what these ants are all about, and although appearing alien-like, they are in fact not savage monsters. If kept properly and contained from escaping, they can prove to be quite interesting to observe and keep as pets. Remember though, these ants will never distinguish the difference between humans and any wild invader or potential threat, and will attack you in defense of their colony.
