Pheidole pallidula and Ytongnest - Premium 60x25x5

Beitragvon jartok » 20. Nov 2011 01:47

i want to get some Pheidole pallidula but im a bit concered about them escaping now i was liking this from antstore

Ytongnest - Premium 60x25x5

for £56

if i got 2 of these and connected via tube the 2 i was wondering if they would be proof enough to stop them getting out obv using ptfe too

is the lid tight and secure - also will they chew through this and roughly how long before i need a third if i do as i know there tiny - never kept small ants before so escape issue is a concern

thanks

I think this size of nest might be a bit overkill for Pheidole, these ants are mega tiny, i underestimated how small they actually were when i got them. maybe go for a smaller size nest, and if the colony ever gets big enough then upgrade. i also think they can chew through ytong, might take them a while but they can do it.

Pheidole pallidula is a nice species.
Use a mixture of portland-cement and gypsum for the nest. So the ants cant chew through. Ytong is too weak for many Species.

i would use a small ant farm and basin, the 20 x 10 or even the 25 x 15 from the starter kits. I would then place these into a container filled with water to act as a moat, u can sit the farm and basin on something so they are not actually in the water, just above it. I think a moat is the best thing for these ants as they get out of anything, iv heard keeping them in test tube setups is also good, but iv never tried it.

Pheidole pallidula may be a small ant but the colony grow fast and big .The only problem with a ant farm is that it can accommodate a small colony relative to it's size. As Pheidole is an evasion artist I plan to use at first test tubes in a evasion prove small tank and when the colony become a bit bigger a vertical plaster or itong nest in a larger frame tank (With an edge at the top to place the anti evasion oil) so the ants must pass the oil film wile hanging from a glass sealing ,something nearly impossible even for Pheidole.

thats what i was thinking one of the glass roofs open top that come in then smear it and then put it in a moat to be on the safe side - currently selling the snakes so once they gone i gonna start setting up but my Harpegnathos[h.]venator are doing well at moment so i may just stick too them for a year
