Fussy little fellows!
My Myrmica rubra have arrived! I haven't yet decided whether to setup the formicarium and put them in now or keep them hibernated until next spring, they still seem quite active, only 2 had died during transport.
I have created a small nursery for them by attaching a Tupperware tub to the test tube by cutting a hole and bonding a small section of hose onto it which attaches to their test tube with some tape. I made a small circular hole in the top and placed in a breathable bung. Inside I have placed a small feeding dish which means I can change the food in the dish by opening up the bung and using tweezers to replace the it, this way I don't have to take off the lid.
Do you think it will be suitable to house them until next year? I’ll obviously wrap them with some bubble wrap or insulation and place them somewhere cool. I am just so tempted to build the formicarium and place them in....
