new ants exposed to light

Beitragvon charles17 » 30. Okt 2009 03:03

I have a Myrmecocystus mimicus queen and some workers (3), and I've kept them in a box, away from the light, for about 2 months now. The water in their test tube is almost gone (and reddish from algae, and the cotton stopper now completely black from mold... if you guy remember my previous post...) so i figured they need food and water, or else they'll die... So I put them in an acrylic basin i got from antstore ( i dont have an antfarm ready...) with various foods and some water. They took to the honey right away... But I'm wondering if they should still be kept out of the light. I don't know if the queen can handle the stress of such a change... Experienced users? What do you advise? Thanks!

They should have a their nest out of the light. You could offer them a new nest tube with a new watertank. Or keep them in your Acryl Basin and provide them with food there. But they still need their nest stube covered with something that protects them from the light

What i would do is get a new test tube.. and wrap it in foil or kitchen towel or something like that.. and add it to the basin... then when u get a nest cover it over.. If you really do want them in the light.. then remove little bits of the cover bit by bit...
