Is it a good idea to toss some broken up bamboo leaves from the shop on the formicary floor, or drt sphagnum moss? All scrunched up, I mean.

anything you like really :) I used moss and grass cuttings (make sure theres no pesticide on the grass of course), among other things, u can have some influence over how the nest looks by using diffrent matirials

Hi there miszt,
I saw that you keep a lot of species. I was wondering if you could help me out with a couple of things. First, I just ordered a 50x50x50 basin and a colony of P dives, size 1000+. I 'm told that this basin will be much to small for a colony of that size. Would that be an accurate assessment to someone of your experience? Secondy, I recently got a little gypsum nest, 4 chambers, and I am wondering if one uses the uncovered long rectangular depression for water that would, I presume, humidify part of the nest, is that correct? I keep everything in basins, Odontoponera transversa, Camponotus ligniperda, Lasius niger, Harpegnathos venator, Manica rubida, Myrmica rubra and Messor barbarus, and have no experience with gypsum.
Thanks very much in advance for your help!

Hi Steve,
If I didn't ask and then filled it with jam and asked why the ants died, then I would feel foolish. Now, I feel enlightened.
Thanks for your help man. #-o

akell, your basin should be large enough for a colony of perhaps 2,000 of these, i dont own any of these myself however, i've got a friend who is keeping two colonies of his own, he uses homemade basins, 60 x 60 x 50 and he has a colony of ca. 2900 and one of a little more, it is useful to conect the nest basin with at least one more basin which can be used for feeding the ants, however, this is not a necessity

hope you do well with your colony

I dont know how you guys are doing it. I have a colony of maybe 1000 and if i would keep them in one single 50x50 basin they would literally pile....

Could you connect 2 or 3 basins together using a tube about 3-5 meters long?

I am intersted in doing this, so please reply.
