Lasius niger Progression/diary

Beitragvon Steph17 » 11. Aug 2014 23:00

Hello, here I will describe the progression of my 2 [later 1] Lasius niger queens/colonies. After a failed attempt to begin a Lasius umbratus colonie I waited untill the Lasius niger colony in my backyard had their nuptial flight [I waited a month ! :x].
But at last on 10-07-2014 i've caught 2 wingless queens in test tubes, and a few days later they allready layed their first eggs :D !
And since then not much has changed, I think some eggs have hatched in the first larvea but there is not much more to tell.
The plan is to keep 1 of the 2 colonies and to sell or release the other colony.
Pictures are still comming and the next update will be when the first workers arrive .

Quik little update, today I found a lot of Lasius niger brood in my garden and as a little experiment I did it in Queen A's test tube { I'm not going to keep her anyway so if anything goes wrong it doesn't matter}. If it succeeds then Queens A is getting her first workers a lot faster. Normally I'm agains brood boosting but Queen A hasn't a lot of brood to start with and like I said before she is going away anyway.
The next update wil really be when the first worker arrive.

Maybe the winterpreparations are done in your country. You have to wait for the end of the winter. Put the setup in a colder place, give them some food until they dont move anymore.

The last update was a while ago.
Not much has happend actualy, I have now a total of 2 workers. I find that suprisingly little !
Can someone tell me why that is ? The winter is aproaching and such a small colony can't survive the hibernation right ?
(No pictures this time :) )
