How to save a colony, if the Queen dies?

How to save a colony, if the Queen dies?

Beitragvon Seph0n » 10. Aug 2011 19:34

As topic states, how do one save a colony where the queen has died?

Is it possible to introduce a new queen, that the workers will accept?
And if so, how long after the queen is dead?

This is only speculation, my own queen is fine. I was just wondering what to do, in case disaster strikes.

Thank you. :)

Hi, my english isnt so well, but i trie to answer your question.

It depends on the species.
Do you have a lasius niger colony?

To give a new queen into a colony is very difficult. It may work if you cool down the ants and the new queen.
Cold ants ( 5°c ) cant move, so they cant kill the queen.

You take cold ants + cold queen and mix (carefully shake) them in a test tube. After mixing you wait a day, letting the ants in the fridge. The next day you shake and mix the cold ants agai.

Cool down and warm up the ants slowly and carefully.

Thanks for your reply, that was just what I wanted to know. And yes, I have a Lasius Niger colony. Do the same things apply to Mymica rubra? As far as I know they can have more than one queen, so it might not be that difficult.
