Hibernation for Lasius niger

Help to the newbie

Beitragvon fernando_regio » 13. Dez 2007 06:23

I will, if you guys dont mind to use this to pose a newbie question, my Lisus Niger have 15 degrees, wich here in Portugal at home is low, they, i think will not hibernate in this temp but there activity is very low, and i only see one ore two outside the nest, i tried to put some water to the clay yesterday but inside the farm they all started to move in a frantic way, if they were hibernating is that bad?

Like you sad, i don't think they actually hibernate at this high temperature. There inner clock is saying to hibernate but the temperature is to high for them, is there no chance you can place them in a colder room ? (Cellar, fridge)

No, i have now some things, and dont have to buy a bigger fridge, mine is too small, and i dont have much space to put them near a window, its not good for them but im trying to give them the lowest temp possible at home, the problem is the other human habitants of the house lol. Im sad to say unfortunatly one of them is dead deep in the clay, they escaveted very deep to the clay and one of them probably went to explore and died in the water. And because with the years the colony will expand and i will have to put some more basins, the solution was to buy a south Europe spec (i have know one Queen Messor Barbaurs that at this temp is hibernating) at the first place, ore one of them that dont need hibernation, but whats done is done,is it real bad for them not to hibernate complitly? I ask this because they are in a very slow activity mode, only one or two moves outside the farm and very occasionaly comes to the arena... thanks in advance.

Complete without hibernating is bad. But maybe you get some more lower degrees in a few months. Dont know much about your area and the temperatures ^^

Well, they all stoped, they are very still in the nest after one night in 10 degrees. They are even now in 13 degrees by day time very still with litle movement in the nest, i think that they are or hibernating or definitly preparing to hibernate, near a window sims to be the solution. Thanks for the help.
