I ran a little experiment with my Lasius
niger queens, some where fed on Protein Jelly designed for reptiles, some on Crickets, and some on Fruit Flys, all of them where also given Honey mixed with Fish Flakes...
After 2 months...
Fruit Flys: ~10 workers, ~20 eggs, ~10 larvae
Crickets: ~10 workers, ~20 eggs, ~10 larvae
Protien Jelly: 20-30 workers! huge pile of eggs and Larvae, to many to count
Protien Jelly seems to be a good way to get a colony off the ground quickly, however, Workers dont seem very interested in collecting it to feed to the queen and larvaes, strangly tho, this is not true for the colonys that started on crickets/fruit flys, they love the protien jelly! So pherhaps there is something in the Protien jelly that they where missing from their diet originally, am waiting for a list of ingrediants from the makers, duno if they will tell me tho
