it does take a little while to get that many ants but my queen progressively lays more eggs my queen laid a batch of 20 eggs which some are now workers and others are cocoons and as more workers come more eggs are laid there is now other 50 eggs.

@Sam: this colony is about 1 year old and my guess is that she has about a 100 workers wright now. But this al depends on the weather and the feeding and lot of other stuff. It is possible that you have a colony from 1 year and still only have 20 workers.

@ Bob: That is true, that is why this species i perfect for beginners. ;)

@ Biolog1: Thanks, on this picture they are eating a Red Runner (i'm not sure where they are from, i buy them at my local pet shop) They like them a lot, as a mater affect i give them to all of my species. ;)

I ran a little experiment with my Lasius niger queens, some where fed on Protein Jelly designed for reptiles, some on Crickets, and some on Fruit Flys, all of them where also given Honey mixed with Fish Flakes...

After 2 months...

Fruit Flys: ~10 workers, ~20 eggs, ~10 larvae
Crickets: ~10 workers, ~20 eggs, ~10 larvae
Protien Jelly: 20-30 workers! huge pile of eggs and Larvae, to many to count :D

Protien Jelly seems to be a good way to get a colony off the ground quickly, however, Workers dont seem very interested in collecting it to feed to the queen and larvaes, strangly tho, this is not true for the colonys that started on crickets/fruit flys, they love the protien jelly! So pherhaps there is something in the Protien jelly that they where missing from their diet originally, am waiting for a list of ingrediants from the makers, duno if they will tell me tho

@miszt

On how many queens did you run this experiment? If only on 3 than I can say that your conclusions are or might be coincidental.

Did you also have a queen that you did not feed with anything in the time of experiment? That is always a must when you run experiments like this. You might have got the same result from her.

38 queens :shock: Now that is what I call an experiment!!! Great. Having in mind this new data it gives more credibility to your experiment. So there is something on this protein jelly. Mith confirmed. :wink:
