Easy, fast growing specie that isn't Lasius niger

Beitragvon Steph17 » 24. Mai 2015 12:21

Hello,
does anybody know an easy and fast growing specie that isn't one of the classical "easy West-European species' (Lasius niger,Myrmica rubra, Formica fusca) ?

I know many species, but what exactly are you looking for? For a Lasius, you could take brunneus, emaraginatus or parasitic one like umbratus or even fuliginosus.
Instead of Formica fusca there are several other Serviformica like rufibarbis, cunicularia or the cinera or fuscocinera.
If you prefer a Myrmicinae you could take M ruginodis, scabrinodis or sabuleti or soething else.....

It doesn't have to be of the genus Lasius, Myrmica or Formica. I'm looking for a specie that doesn't need heating, can take a lot of stress and grows fast (and of course in't Lasius niger, Myrmica rubra or Formica fusca).

In Germany, we call such a wish the search for the "eierlegende Wollmilchsau",
meaning the search for something, that got propertys, which are for themselves possible, but in compination impossible.

What exactly do you dislike at those species?

I don't like about them that their so common.
Isn't there a specie that is in care about the same as Lasius niger, but yet different ?

At the beginning, the wish often grows big, to start with something special, but that's simply nonsence!
The classical species are neither less worthy, nore less interesting!
In fact european species got a wide inventory of form and behavior;
there are differences between
Camponotus,
Raptiformica,
Coptoformica,
Serviformica,
Cautolasius,
Chthonolasius,
Dendrolasius,
Lasius s. str.,
Leptothorax,
Manica,
Myrmica,
Temnothorax,
Tetramorium,
etc.
- and of course between the species themselves.

Look, I don't say those species are less worthy or not interesting, in fact my Myrmica rubra colony is the most interesting one I've got ! I only ask for a alternative for those species, because I wan't to see what more (relative easy) species there are in Europe.

Ok, if you want another species, that doesn#t need heating or something else, you could take Messor structor or another Messor from Europe. The regular room temperature is more than enough.
And after all the behaviour is very different to Myrmica ;)
