Camponotus singularis

Camponotus singularis

Just recently I have received a large, beautiful colony of "Bow Ant" Carpenter ants, C. singularis from Asia. Although they arrived after only a week of shipping from Asia to the USA to Canada, many ants perished within the next few days. There are still about 50 ants remaining and I am hopeful that the colony's queen begins to settle and resume egg laying.

For 4-5 days during the die-off of many ants, I allowed them to settle and nest in a large tube closed off with a cork entrance hole to add further darkness. The queen now resides at the very back of the tube and soldiers naturally keep a close watch over her. Here are some photos of the colony.

Sadly, the queen was dead today upon my return home from work. I'm disappointed in the massive die-off of ants from their travel but the queen unfortunately is the key to the colony's survival. I will try this species again in the near future hopefully. :(
