Camponotus sericeus

Beitragvon miszt » 17. Nov 2007 00:40

This is a diurnal, conspicuous golden colored Camponotus species. It will be commonly called as Golden ant due to their golden pubescence on the gaster. Likes very sunny places, will forage alone or in small groups, will direct workers in tandem movement to food source or new nest.

* Taxonomy: Subfamily Formicinae, Tribe Camponotini
* Distribution: South Asia
* Color: black with golden gaster
* Characteristics: haired gaster, monogyne
* Size: Queen about 11 - 13 mm
* Nutrition: Honey- or sugar water and insects
* Hibernation: No (see climate)
* Climate: Tropical
* Nest building: Soil nests
* Planting: nothing specific

Golden Ants! I've wanted these since seeing them on a nature documentry a few years ago! these arent the completly gold ones, but they have a gold gaster and black head/thorax/legs

They will be replacing my doomed cataglyphis colony next week when the Queen arrives :)

Tank is ready :D

Air Temp stablized at 26-28C during the day, and 18-20 at night, 50-90% humidity

Warm humid section of Ytong nest @ 23C and 80-100% humidity, cooler dry section @ 19-22C and 30-60% humidity

these come from India, so this seems about right to me, i used a ytong with a large resiviour in the top left side, which i've filled with gravel and a mini-palm type plant (gravel is to stop these soil diggers setting up nest there)

Ground covering is a layer of sand/loam and a thin layer of peat (rather than soil, peat has less nutriants, so less likly to go moldy)

Only thing left to do is fix a fan for more ventilation because of the high humidty, i dont want molds growing!

Also added sum live moss, which i'm hoping will do well in the high humidity, but its english moss, so may not like the high tempretures, also added a few fake plants i had left over from my aquarium

theres allot of condensation on the glass in the nest at the moment, i've over filled the reseviour this morning to make sure it wont flood if i do in future

Hey guys,
on that behalf, my girlfriend suprised me with a Camponotus sericeus queen today ;) !
Going to show some pictures as soon as i get my hands on the cam cable tomorrow.
The queen looks like a gold coin! Breathtakingly beautifull. In the few hours of her stay here, she already layed some extra eggs, and now im looking forward to seeing a new colony start :)
Jimmy, best luck on getting your girlfriend used to our wonderfull pets. As soon as the enthusiasm start, she will want them all over the house;)
Best of luck for you in your new home and that new part of your life!
Greetings,
Necturus
