Camponotus ligniperdus diary

Camponotus ligniperdus diary

Beitragvon jbc » 23. Apr 2011 20:41

I received my colony yesterday. With 16 minors and I think 1 major worker, but no eggs. :( For now I keep them in a 35x25x20 basin. They are stressed out from the shipping, I think. They forage just a little bit. I will try to update as frequently as I can. :D

And here are some pics.

One ant died:(
They pulled 2 flies in their test tube.

Day 5:
Nothing new 2 ants are guarding the test tubes entrance and still the flies are in the test tube.

Day 7 28th April:
The brought one of their flies out of the test tube and pulled another in. They keep foraging, even at day.

You are right they tend to be living in Germany coz there is warmer. But we can find other Camponotus spec. in our contries. Camponotus will soon be mating so find a Camponotus nest and watch them if there are some winged ants in the surface if yes then ready your test tubes and go out scouting for some queens that same day.

P.S. They have their nuptial flight in May.

They are still eating those flies.

Are they still in a test tube?
I would move them into a damp y-tong soon.

Well I moved the tube near the ytong like 1 cm from ytong with connected tube and today only one died :D

I removed those white rocks from the arena and put some damp sand I believe they were dying from the white powder(from rocks).

Hi guys I have big problem!

Now I'm left with 3 workers and one queen is this normal?

At 22nd April I had 17 workers now after 22 days I have 3.

They are still in the test tube in the feeding area.

1.My question why are they dying?

2.Will the queen survive?

To answer an obvious question, no this is not normal. I would take all the white rock out, maybe the powder off the rocks is coating the ants. The queen probably hasn't been out the tube and thats why she hasn't been effected yet unlike the foragers. Take it all out and clean the tank, don't use any substrate until your new eggs gave hatched. Then stick with sand or loam, I don't use anything. I am able to see the ants better that way and they don't mind.

Well I changed the rocks to sand like 3 days back. So lets hope that the queen will survive.

Well I think mine will survive coz they both (now I have 1 worker and one queen) are pretty healthy. they moved out of the test tube under the feeding dish but they didnt take the brood with them.
