kashmir79: Praying Mantis (6. Mär 2008 23:57)

hey guys

well me and Matt where talking about Praying mantises and i got really interested and researched for a week or so on how to keep them.
They are very easy to keep, according to the Experts. you can put them on your hand and feed them live crickets, locusts, bees, flies, Mice !!! yes Mice. and have been known to acquire a taste for Humming Birds !
they only need a bit of Room Temp. a tad Humidity which helps them to Moult.

they are also a 'Gardner's Friend' one of the best natural pesticides.
and LOVE green Houses.

so yes, on Friday I am going to be the recipient of a Giant Asian Praying Mantis. bright Green, its a sub-adult, not fully grown She will be 7-8 inches whens she an adult ! . cant wait to pick her up. if i have the Guts !!!

Hierodula membranacea the Latin name is.

and i have about 30 Baby Chinese praying mantis, so Cute, but their only 3 weeks old and starting to get aggressive with one another, their only this big -------- and are feisty things. they should reach up tp 8 inches Max when they are fully grown (female) and males slightly smaller.

and im selling some Babies, if anyone wants any. just PM me.

Mantids are very cool! Ive been playing with the idea of building a mantis vivarium for a while. Theres some really good pics, video and info @ http://mantiskingdom.com/ Check it out if you get a minute.

What kind of setup do they need ??

kashmir79: (7. Mär 2008 14:50)

just a rather big tank, a good plant, colour mainly green, make sure the Mantis can Blend in with it. some scattered leaves, branches. the tank needs to get bigger as it gets older, and it needs Moulting Space to shed its exoskeleton. :D

omg you have to be joking me, i have just bought a mantis ootheca(egg sack) of ebay(giant asian), what a coincidence that you guys are talking about it. i have a strong feeling that mine is not going to hatch, but i will give it a couple of weeks before i get a refund. i got picture of the egg sack in a simple hatchery if you want.

Praying Mantis are wikid creatures, i remeber one landing on my little cousins head in Thailand, he freaked out, but i picked it up, and the expressions on its face are very kool, espcially the eyes, i've been contemplating setting a few of these ups recently to :)

the Nymphs make good repitle food btw, so would be good for larger ants to, however not small ones, or they will get eaten lol

They look really nice kashmir, but i stick with ants. :)

I have had an African mantid (bright green with yellow on the inside of it's arms) and a Ghost mantid (looks like a damp, scrunched-up dead leaf).
Amazing creatures, very intelligent, not even my phasmids could hide for long before SNAP! :D .
I'm thinking of getting a Gaint Malaysian Shield mantid if I can find one.
