Sphecomyrmex: Species for ytong nest (6. Sep 2008 11:53)

Hi,
I will try to make an ytong nest. I know some species can dig the ytong, but i don't know what species can do it. Do anyone can help me? I'ld want to know what species could dig the ytong.
Thanks

Messor species, Pheidole species and Pheidologeton species for sure. Most other species will not dig trough y-tong.

What about Camponotus? And Tetramorium?

Kale^^: Re: Species for ytong nest (12. Sep 2008 17:27)

I think most camponotus don't dig thru.. I'm sure tetramorium wont.

EDIT: i've never heard of cany campo digging..

Excuse me but i've not understand tetramorium can dig or can't dig the ytong...
And another question...Can Myrmica dig the ytong?

JimmyVe: Re: Species for ytong nest (12. Sep 2008 19:30)

No Myrmica, Tetramorium species don't dig trough. Normally Camponotus species don't dig trough nether. Not as for as i know, but some have strong jaws so it could be possible.

i think most species with major's or soldiers can dig though ytong if they want to

Well i think you are right about that gabranth. A friend of mine had a Camponotus species in a y-tong and they dig through it. I never had it with any of my Camponotus species but it seems that you never know for sure. So i would say it is better to prevent than to cure. ;)
