ford-ute: worker colony (15. Jul 2008 02:20)

Hi guys

its been a while my 3 queens i had all laid eggs but they never hatched i had about 20 or 30 eggs for about 3 months and then my queens died just recently :( .

since i have about 9 months till the next naptil flight i thought i would spend some time refining my skill and do an all worker colony to help me learn how to care for my friend and favorite conditiond and foods the ants i will be keeping will be a compontus species

so can any one help me with some ideas of what i will be up against because worker colonies are different to queened colonies or even if this is a good idea and do you think this will help my ant keeping skills

Hello Ford-ute, welcome back. ;)

Sorry to hear that, maybe your queens where just not strong enough to raise a colony. Or they where not fertilized.

What doe you mean with a workers colony ? You are just going to pick up some workers from out side and put them in a farm ? If that is what you mean i don't think it going to help you with building up your experience. The workers have no goal in live when there is no queen or brood to raise. They just will sit there and wait for dead to come.

To bad it is illegal to send ants to you because here the ants are have there flight this week/month.

yes this is what i mean but i just thought it might help me refine umidity and temp control for my set

will queen lay eggs if they are not fertile

Yes, she will. But most likely she will eat them or if they do hatch you will get only male ants and no worker.

In deed. ;)

Your idea wasn't that bad but i don't think it is useful.

thanks guys

i guess anouther 9 mounths till i can get my queen and maybe try and find one of the queen less species in my area

the ant is quite easy to find but to get them to mate is very difficult i have been trying

If these ants are very common in your area you can always try to dig up a small colony. That way you don't have to wait another 9 months. ;)
