Hi, im new to antkeeping. The most I ever had was a small ant farm when I was about 8.

Just a few questions, how do I get started. I will be starting with Lasius Niger. As this is the recommended starter ant?

But what do I need to keep them. I have a spare 100x50x40 (length x height x width) fish tank that I want to use. Can I do this? As in can I use this as the complete unit until the colony grows?

If so what do I furnish it with? What substrate? Do they require anything else in there with them? Like a water source? I was going to put a small dish in with bug gel. It's a water based product I use to keep my crickets hydrated. Will it be suitable?

Cheers for any help
Mike
