Sphecomyrmex: Help for Plagiolepis pygmaea (7. Jun 2008 20:52)

Hi all,
I've found a Plagiolepis pygmaea's colony but i don't know how to keep it. Anyone can help me? I put them in a plaster nest, is it OK? What about feeding?

Thanks

Just feed them what you feed you other ants. Insects, honey and some water. These are small ants so don't give them to large insects. You can keep them in a normal farm with sand or in a y-tong. But don't make it to large. (the farm i mean) the out world you can chose. ;)

Hi Sphecomyrmex,

P. pygmaea is among my favorite species, they´re a wonderful bunch.

They like arid habitats so do not overdo watering. I kept them in Y-tong nest. I never used plaster but I guess it should do. just remember that they´re really small so do not make large chambers. Keep them really small, no more than 3 millimetres, maybe with one or a few chambers a little larger.

Thez don´t eat many insects and seem to be rather nectarivorous, so provide them with lots of honey-water and, apparently, they like to visit flowers.

Enjoy them, they have a lot to offer.
