jcrusader: honey water bad for the ants? (31. Mai 2008 20:35)

I was waching my ants last night eating the honey water i useually put out for them when i notice that when they put their heads down to collect the honey their antenna goes in it also then when they get out of the honey i can see them fiddleing with their antennnas trying to get it out i think dont you think this is bad for them because its just like us dipping our eyes into honey?

Well its not bad for them no.. and antenas are not their eyes lol it would be like us sticking our hands in honey.. which aint so bad..

Their antena is more like a combination of a Tounge and Nose, they use them to see whats around them, and whether somethings good to eat :)

Antennas are much more important for ants than eyes, they are ant's primary sensors. Blind ants can still work effectively, especially inside nests, where they don't use eyes at all, and they also can find their way outside, using scent trails. Ant with damaged both antennas can't do anything. But of course dipping antennas into honey doesn't cause any damage, ants will simply clean them.
