When filling the farm for lasius niger do you need to use sand and loam or is sand adequate?

Well Sand Is ok I have used sand for one of my colony and just normal sand and they nested in it and were very good ;)

You could mix it up a bit, +- 2 sand and 1 loam. That way the sand is stronger and you have less change of the tunnels collapsing.

depends on the type of sand, the smaller the grains the better, extremly fine sand is the best, the more coarse, or bigger the grains, the more likly the tunnels are to collapse as it dries out
