Crimmy: Stinky ant? (24. Feb 2008 20:16)

Been watching the lil buggers for awhile. Got pissed off at finding hundreds on my desk one morning so i took my hand and ssmacked em all off into the garbage but a few were crushed under my hand (sowwy!) but i noticed they gave off a really weird smell. Kinda reminded me of rotting wood or mold. But i dunno. Very hard to explain that smell. Is there a specific type of ant that farts on you?

Lol well I hear that some formica species spray some stuff that stinks... Thats about all I think :) But in the US maybe ;)

Formica? Havent read about that on eyet i dont think. Hehe curious to find out what type of buggets keep trying to irritate me. Think theyre too small to be picked up by my digicam though. Lets give it a shot!

Okay if its an ant species in US probably a US ant keeper will have a better chance to know than someone in europe ;)

Well there are plenty of ants that small very bad if you crush them. Really hard to identify on this base. ;)

It could be so-called "odorous house ant", Tapinoma sessile. They say it smells like a rotten coconut. Check here: http://mississippientomologicalmuseum.org.msstate.edu//Researchtaxapages/Formicidaepages/genericpages/Tapinoma.sessile.htm

Oops, there was a typo in link. Now it works.

From what im reading on that site it sounds more like i have the argentine ant. But my ants are smaller, blacker, shinier and i cannot put a name to the smell they give off. Right now it could probable be the "little black ants" or the "Odorous house ants" Is my best bet. Im digging up hte back yard for an unrelated project and i saw about quarter inch sized holes all around a tree trunk in the clumps of dirt. Oh thats another thing there were thousands of these little dirt tee-pees in the backyard as well. I didnt see many ants though only 1 or 2 fleeing from me =P
