Hey, i've always wanted an AntFarm but i want a queen ant. I currently live in NSW, Australia and was wondering if there any any ants i can buy from here that are allowed to be imported into australa.
If not does anyone know of anywhere i can buy a Queen Ant within Australia? Or the best place to catch one.
I've read you just pick the fattish ones up off the ground after they lose their wings because that means they have been fertilized. If i do manage to get a fertilized queen, can i put it in the farm by it's self and expect it to start producing eggs?
Please help out a newbie :)

I think it would be the easierst way if you went out waiting for the mating flight and do keep your eyes open for a young queen shedding her wings. you happen to have a very nice choice of ants in australia that most people on this forum would envy you for ;)
Indeed you dont need much more then the queen and any cointainer containing moist substrate for her to construct her founding cell in.

Oh thanks :) ever since i was little i have been amazed by ants, i use to sit outside feeding an ants nest and playing with them etc. Now just recently i saw a youtube video and was like "Hey i want one"
Um, Anyone know when the mating flight takes place in Australia?
i am going to make a y-tong tomorrow and get it all set up. I just need to know where and when is the best place to find a queen ant. Also if there was any other Australians on here could they possibly help me out in sending me one if you have extra?

In deed, you have such nice species over there (damn ;) ) it would be best you keep one from there.
If i'm not mistaken it is summer now there so that is the time they keep there flight (summer and spring). Go out on a cloudy day, after the rain ore when it is going to rain. Hot and cloudy days are the best.
Forest ore nearby forest is also better than in the city. ;)
It is almost impossible for us to send queens to you. To much control there. ;) And it is illegal as for as i know.

Australia is VERY VERY strict about importing insects, dead or alive, also many species in Australia require a licence to collect (eg bulldog ants M pav), so be carefull....but, you have some amazing species out there! dont know why you'd want to import anything lol
Thanks Jimmy, its currently summer here as you said and today it rained rather hard, if tomorrow is sunny should i go looking for a Queen? I really think this is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Where i live there isn't too many forests but there is a few parks with trees etc. Would it be best to check around the parks etc?
I can't really see myself finding a Queen without luck. Is there any chance i would be able to buy a Queen from a shop? I tried google and i couldn't find anything about Queen ants in Australia.

Miszt it's because i couldn't find anywhere in australia that would sell me an australian species. I am also doubtful i will find a Queen Ant my self without alot of hard work and luck.
Tomorrow would be fine ;) maybe this evening (don't know how late it is there) ore in the morning.
Parks would be fine to. Try looking nearby ants nests. If its swarming time you find lot ants with wings, but like you said, wait to catch them until they removed there wings.
I'm not sure, (i googled myself to) but i don't think there is a shop in Australia.
When do you get flying ants all over the place subnOize? thats when you should look, after you've been seeing flying ants for 30-60 minutes, get down on ur hands n knees and search for ones that have removed their wings......they are the most likly mated queesn, u may want to collect 2, incase one has not been fertilized, which can happen occasionaly
Hmm down at a park near i live there was a big wooden seat. Once in the afternoon i remember there was like 100's of flying ants around it but i'm not sure if that seat is there anymore because it was a very big ants nest. I will go down to the park tomorrow and look around i know there is another big seat on the other side of the park near the water so it might be the same.
btw it's 2:05am lol i should be in bed but can't sleep.
